Help the Environment on Earth Day by Swapping Books, CDs, DVDs, and Video Games
Boston-based swapping website, Swaptree.com, will make a donation to The Sierra Club for every trade made on Earth Day
Boston, Mass. (PRWEB) April 21, 2008 -- Swaptree.com (http://www.swaptree.com), the innovative website that allows members to trade books, CDs, DVDs and video games with other users for free, will be donating $1 for every trade made on Earth Day, Tuesday, April 22, to America's oldest and largest environmental organization, The Sierra Club.
"One of the main reasons we started Swaptree was to help everyone recycle more and throw away less. The whole idea of Earth Day is to bring awareness to what each of us can do to help protect the environment. On Tuesday, not only can you recycle your media collection, but you can also help support The Sierra Club," said Greg Boesel, President of Swaptree.
In recent studies by the Green Press Initiative and the Environmental Protection Agency, it was estimated that every book contributes 8.85 pounds of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, and the book industry chops down in excess of 19 million trees yearly. CDs and DVDs pose even greater problems since each disk contributes 2.2 pounds of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere and 100,000 pounds of CDs and DVDs are deposited in US landfills every month. In addition, CDs and DVDs are made from harmful materials such as polycarbonate plastic, petroleum-based lacquer and paints, aluminum and other metals, which release chemicals that contribute to environmental and health problems as well as global warming, both when they are produced and when they are destroyed.
"You hear statistics about how much waste we create and it's pretty frightening. Recycling our media may be a small step, but its clearly one we need to take. If getting free books, DVDs, video games or CDs wasn't enough for you to sign up for Swaptree, now you will be helping the environment and donating to a great environmental organization on Swaptree's dime," commented Boesel.
To use Swaptree, users simply list the items that they have to trade and the items that they want to receive and Swaptree's two- and three-way trade algorithms instantly show the user all of the items that they can receive for the items that they have.
The service is completely free, and users only pay for the shipping of their item. Swaptree also simplifies the mailing process by allowing users to print a postage label on their regular printer, which means that users don't have to weigh items, worry about stamps or even go to the post office. And of course, in addition to saving money, users who are trying to be more environmentally conscious appreciate the fact that Swaptree reduces consumption by promoting sharing and recycling.
