Texas A&M Aggie Corps Of Cadets Ross Volunteer Company Wraps Up Busy Month of Performances

Exhibition drill team honors visiting international dignitaries, fellow Texas A&M Aggies.

College Station, TX (PRWEB) May 2, 2008 -- One of the nation's oldest and most prestigious honor guards, the Texas A&M Aggie Corps Of Cadets Ross Volunteer Company, completed a busy April with numerous performances across the state. The Ross Volunteer Company is the official Honor Guard for the Governor of the state of Texas, and, aside from the Cadet Corps itself, is the oldest student organization in the state of Texas.

April 11 - Sabre Arch Salute-Arrival of the Aga Khan - Austin:
Governor Rick Perry, who was a member of the Texas A&M Aggie Corps Of Cadets, requested the Ross Volunteers to do a sabre arch salute at a special ceremony for the arrival of the Aga Khan, the spiritual leader of 16 million Ismaili Muslims worldwide. The Ross Volunteer Company played a key role in the elaborate red carpet ceremony to honor the Aga Khan at Austin Bergstrom International Airport. The event signified the first stop in the United States for His Highness on a tour that marked his 50th year as the Aga Khan. Governor Perry has been a long-time supporter and friend of the Ismaili community as Texas is home to tens of thousands of Ismaili Muslims who contribute to the social, economic and cultural fabric of the state.

April 13 - Parents' Weekend Performance- Kyle Field:
One of the major highlights of Parents' Weekend at Texas A&M University is the Corps of Cadets review at Kyle Field, which includes one of the most memorable performances of the year by the Ross Volunteer Company. The company, comprised of 72 juniors and 72 seniors, lined up across the Kyle Field turf and performed its many traditional maneuvers. The RV cadets, wearing their famous starched white dress uniforms, received a standing ovation when they performed the legendary ripple line across the entire Kyle Field turf.

April 21 - Aggie Muster - Reed Arena:
The Ross Volunteer Company has been a major part of the annual Muster ceremony for decades. Muster is Texas A&M's most solemn and visible tradition. It's a time set aside to honor Aggies who have died since the last ceremony. Names of those who have died in the past year were read, and as each name was called, a family member or friend answered "Here" and a candle will be lit. The Ross Volunteer Company then marched in to fire a rifle volley followed by a special arrangement of "Taps." The 21-gun salute by the RVs proved to be one of the more dramatic moments of Muster.

About the Texas A&M Aggie Corps Of Cadets Ross Volunteer Company:
The oldest honor guard and drill team of its kind in the state, the Ross Volunteer Company is the Honor Guard for the Governor of the State of Texas. Beginning in 1876 as the Scott Volunteers they were renamed in honor of former Governor and president of the college Lawrence Sullivan Ross on his death in 1898. The top 80 juniors in the Corps are selected to become Ross Volunteers making it one of the most prestigious honors in the university. The RVs participate in parades and ceremonial events across the United States.
