John R. Sorrenti, FAIA, of JRS Architect, P.C. Elected National Chair of AIA Fellows

Long Island architect, John R. Sorrenti, FAIA, of JRS Architect, P.C, was elected National Chair of the AIA College of Fellows Regional Representatives for a three year term that begins May 15.

Mineola, NY (PRWEB) May 5, 2008 -- John R. Sorrenti, FAIA, founder and principal of JRS Architect, P.C., was elected National Chair of the prestigious American Institute of Architecture's College of Fellows Regional Representatives. He will serve for three years, effective May 15.

"It is a tremendous honor to have been elected National Chair and it will be a great privilege to serve on such an influential organization whose mission is to promote leadership within our profession," said Sorrenti, who resides in Glen Cove, NY.

"By taking on this position and being pro-active, I can continue to give back to my profession while helping my firm remain on the leading edge of the profession, which also helps our clients," Sorrenti added.

Members of the fellowship, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed on an architect, are elected by their peers and are an elite cadre: of the AIA's total 83,000 members, fewer than 2,650 are fellows. There are about 140,000 architects nationwide. The AIA bestows the honor on architects who have been association members for at least 10 years and have made significant contributions to the profession and society.

The chair is chosen from the current regional representatives of which there are 28. Regional representatives work with the AIA to promote and encourage members to advance to the fellowship.

Sorrenti, who holds degrees in architecture from New York Institute of Technology and Ohio University, is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and is the New York State Fellow to National AIA. In addition, he is a past president of the AIA Long Island Chapter, past president of the New York State AIA and a past vice president of the National AIA. He has been a member of the New York State Board of Architecture since 2005 and is a member of the Committee on Professional Development of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). He is also a member of the Town of North Hempstead Landmarks Preservations Commission.

Serving as a lobbyist for legislative issues, Sorrenti has achieved a reputation for quality of leadership. In 1991, on behalf of the AIA, Sorrenti helped to form the guidelines for the Americans with Disabilities Act and in 1993, assisted with the New York City ADA code. Sorrenti also served on the National Architectural Accrediting Board committee for college accreditation programs, has performed reviews of his peers for the American Council of Engineering Consultants.
