Thanks to New York Times best-selling author, Lisa Gardner, the lucky--and murderous--winner of Gardner's Kill-a-Friend, Maim-a-Buddy contest can have the person of their choice meet an untimely demise in Gardner's next book.

The contest serves as a way for Gardner to come up with new character names for her books. Instead of just going though a phone book, Gardner lets her fans nominate friends names or their own names, for what Gardner calls, "immortality." "I need people to kill," says Gardner, "in a literary way of course."

The current Kill-a-Friend, Maim-a-Buddy contest--the fifth--wraps up at the end of May, but the "lucky stiff" selected won't appear in print until a year from now, in a book she's just wrapping up. Meanwhile, her novel, HIDE, has just been released in paperback, and Gardner is getting ready to launch her newest title, SAY GOODBYE, in July of this summer.
