Battleship Missouri Memorial Celebrates 10 Years In Hawaii

10th Anniversary Calendar includes special tours, free admission day for military and local residents, exclusive member events and commemorative ceremonies

Pearl Harbor (Vocus/PRWEB ) February 25, 2008 -- The arrival of the Battleship Missouri in Hawaii nearly a decade ago was one of the most extensively, internationally covered events in the State of Hawaii's recent history, with front-page photos running as far away as London and local residents crowding the beaches to catch a glimpse of the "Mighty Mo" passing Waikiki's Diamond Head and Honolulu shorelines.

The Battleship Missouri Memorial will mark the 10th anniversary of the Missouri's arrival this summer by presenting two special, commemorative guided tours throughout the month of June, as well as "A Mighty Mahalo," a daylong celebration featuring complimentary admission for kama'aina (local residents) and military on Saturday, June 21, the day of the anniversary.

Weapons Tour (June 2008):
Offered at 1:30 p.m. daily throughout June, the new 60-minute "Weapons Tour" will feature the wide array of weaponry on the Missouri from throughout her five decades of active-service. By presenting the Weapons Tour, the memorial is providing a special tour that arguably has been the most frequently requested new visitor experience since she arrived in Pearl Harbor. The tour will highlight the Mighty Mo's WWII-era anti-aircraft guns, Cold War-era Tomahawk cruise missile and Harpoon anti-ship missile systems, Operation Desert Storm-era anti-aircraft/missile Phalanx guns, massive 5-inch gun turrets and, of course, her trademark 16-inch main gun turrets. The tour will be $14 per person after admission, or free for "Friends of the Mighty Mo" members (who will have first preference for reservations).

Generations Tour (June 2008):
Offered at 2 p.m. daily throughout June, the new 60-minute "Generations Tour" will feature inspiring stories from the many generations who served aboard the Battleship Missouri, from World War II, to the Korean War, to Operation Desert Storm ... to even the "new crew" of the memorial over the past decade. Featuring the best of all the memorial's guided tours, including the famous site of Japan's formal WWII surrender, the special tour will cover more than 60 years of memories, three wars and the monumental effort of turning a rusting battleship into a successful, sustainable memorial. This tour will be $10 per person after admission, or free for "Friends of the Mighty Mo" members (who will have first preference for reservations).

A Mighty Mahalo (Arrival 10th Anniversary, Saturday, June 21, 2008):
On June 21, exactly 10 years after the Missouri passed Waikiki's Diamond Head Crater and thousands of welcoming onlookers, the Battleship Missouri Memorial will present "A Mighty Mahalo," a day featuring complimentary admission for kama'aina (local residents) and anyone with a government-issued military ID as a way of saying "thank you" to the local and military communities alike for their support and patronage over the last decade. The celebration will also feature special activities from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., including food served pierside; patriotic performances by military and school bands; free educational activities for youth to learn about life at sea; and more.

10th Anniversary Calendar:
