It’s Time to Start Checking for Ticks: Bayer Animal Health Offers Tips to Protect Humans and Dogs from Discomfort and Disease

Bayer Animal Health is reminding pet owners that now is the time to consider their options for protecting both themselves and their pets from the discomfort and disease that can be caused by fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes.

Shawnee, KS (PRWEB) May 3, 2007 -- Bayer Animal Health is reminding pet owners that now is the time to consider their options for protecting both themselves and their pets from the discomfort and disease that can be caused by fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes.

For dogs residing in rural or suburban settings, or those accompanying their owners in outdoor activities such as hunting or camping, “the big three” — fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes — may pose serious threats. In fact, they can lead to a host of Canine Vector Borne Diseases (CVBD), such as ehrlichiosis, Lyme disease, heartworm disease, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. And humans need to be careful as well. In its publication, “What campers, hikers, hunters, and people working outdoors should know,” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the use of repellents to protect humans from ticks. The CDC states, “Apply repellents to discourage tick attachment. Repellents containing permethrin can be sprayed on boots and clothing, and will last for several days. Repellents containing DEET (n, n-diethyl-m-toluamide) can be applied to the skin, but will last only a few hours before reapplication is necessary.*

For dogs, K9 Advantix® from Bayer Animal Health is a once-a-month topical flea, tick, and mosquito treatment that contains permethrin and imidacloprid. K9 Advantix repels and kills fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes on dogs and puppies 7 weeks of age and older. K9 Advantix is not for use on cats.

K9 Advantix® is proven effective against the four most common ticks found on dogs in the United States: the Brown dog tick, vector of the organism that can cause ehrlichiosis; the American dog tick, vector of the organism that can cause Rocky Mountain spotted fever; the Deer tick, vector of the organism that can cause Lyme disease; and Lone Star tick, suspected vector of several vector-borne infectious organism diseases.

“Fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes are more than a nuisance to dogs — they’re a threat because they can carry and transmit the organisms that can cause diseases that can not only infect pets but people, as well,” says Dez Young, host of the award-winning series Hunting with Hank, televised on VERSUS network. “Make sure that a flea, tick and mosquito treatment is part of your dog’s monthly maintenance, every month. I use Bayer’s K9 Advantix on Dash. K9 Advantix gives me peace of mind when I take Dash into the field because I know he’ll be protected from the most common external parasites wherever we go — in all climates, on all terrain, and in every season.”

E.P.A.-accepted label claims indicate that K9 Advantix remains effective after bathing and swimming, and it offers the repellency against all three parasites--fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes that Frontline Plus does not.

Bayer’s Animal Health Division has long provided veterinarians, breeders, and dog owners with products that enhance and ensure the life and health of their dogs. K9 Advantix, like all Bayer Animal Health products, is available through veterinarians. For more information, please visit www.K9advantix.com.
