Choral Earth Challenges NBC’s Clash of the Choirs to Go Green

Choral Earth is tapping its network of world-class advisors and colleagues to create a virtual Green Gift Basket for Clash of the Choirs.

Charlottesville, VA (PRWEB) December 19, 2007 -- NBC's Clash of the Choirs reality show (Dec. 17 – 20) pits celebrity-led choirs in a throw-down to gain a prize for the winning choir's home city. Choral Earth is upping the ante with its own challenge: Green the prizes in keeping with NBC-Universal's "green is universal" commitment.

"When a colleague told me about NBC's commitment to go green, I started wondering how to carry that over to Clash of the Choirs prizes," says Rachel Bagby, Founder of Choral Earth and formerly of Bobby McFerrin's Voicestra.

It's no wonder that she did, given the score on Choral Earth. The organization commissions music and creates interactive programs that help choirs green their communities.

"We're tapping our network of world-class advisors and colleagues — including David Johnston, the 2007 International Sustainability Pioneer Award-winner — to create a virtual Green Gift Basket for Clash of the Choirs. The gifts include consultations, services and products to address the sustainability goals of the choristers' cities," Bagby says.

Choral Earth is encouraging audience members — and especially residents of the five Clash of the Choirs cities (Philadelphia, Cincinnati, New Haven, Oklahoma City and Houston) — to let their voices be heard. A group for each of the five featured cities has already been set up for community members to make suggestions and discuss options at www.SingYourPart.com.

No matter which choir wins the competition, all the featured cities will benefit from the generosity being seeded by Choral Earth. One of Choral Earth's partners is giving all 100 Clash of the Choirs singers, 5 celebrity choirmasters, and the entire production crew a membership to Co-op America. Membership includes the National Green Pages, where they can find green resources and products for all their needs year round.

Choral Earth's basket features a commitment from David Gershon, to help the winning choir's city roll out ''Low Carbon Diet, A 30 Day Program to Lose 5000 Pounds'' — Gershon's book and community action plan to achieve the carbon reduction goal of 20% by 2010. He has also donated 10 copies of the book.

Gershon beta tested the program with a number of partners, including Al Gore's "The Climate Project" and Interfaith Power & Light, an initiative of 4,000 congregations committed to climate change action around the country. Over fifty grassroots organizations have now successfully utilized Gershon's program with their members or in their communities.

Bagby hopes that choirs from all over will visit www.SingYourPart.com and share ways to be active in addressing climate change and other environmental issues in their own communities. According to Chorus America, 28 million people sing in over 250,000 choruses and choirs in the U.S.

"If we can tap even 15 percent of the choristers in the U.S. and get them thinking about how to make a difference with their music and audiences, we can make tremendous gains toward greening our communities," says Bagby.

"We know some choirs are already active. They can share what they're doing and upload videos on our online community site, www.SingYourPart.com."

Rachel Bagby, J.D., Founder and Creative Director of Choral Earth, is a Philadelphia native. A graduate of Stanford Law School and 3rd generation activist, her work articulates the challenges and joys of cultivating "homefulness:" restorative relationships between nature and culture. Author of ''Divine Daughters'' (HarperCollins 1999) Bagby's compositions have been featured on stage and in award winning films, including ''Alice Walker: Visions of the Spirit,'' and the Emmy Award-winning documentary, ''Dialogues with Mad Women.''

Choral Earth's mission is to engage 15% of North America's 28 million choristers in performing ecologically-themed music and timely action — to sing their parts — for positive climate change and green communities. To get involved, visit www.SingYourPart.com.
