(PRWEB) September 25, 2007 -- 8th Annual Lupus Race for Life 5k Run/Walk, 1 mile Run at La Mirada Regional Park

The newest sponsor, Earthwater, captures the true meaning of helping others by asking this question -- If you had a chance would you change the world?

Earthwater does. They use the proceeds from their water sales to help the most desperate around the world -- those who do not have clean drinking water.

Most of us would reply yes if given the chance. For the millions affected by lupus worldwide your chance to help them is by supporting the Lupus Race for Life -- either by volunteering, donating or by participating. This remarkable event is unique in that it brings together law enforcement and fire fighting agencies for one cause -- fight against lupus.

Each year, LA County Sheriff Lee Baca runs this race. Often times he is the first law enforcement officer across the finish line. CHP Chief Gary Dominquez along with OC Sheriff Carona proudly participates. There are an overwhelming number of officers and fire fighters that run in honor of someone with lupus. Lupus International is also proud to have the support of the NLPOA (National Latino Police Officers Association) North Los Angeles County Chapter. They have gone above and beyond to support our cause.

Sunday, September 30, 2007 marks the 8th year Lupus International has hosted this event. It will take place at La Mirada Regional Park. With the support of Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe and his deputy Joe Matthews we have achieved great success.

Register and donate online by going to www.lupusinternational.com. All proceeds benefit Lupus International and go directly to helping those afflicted with this life threatening disease.

Those who can't run or walk, then donate; purchase a mile marker along the course. The marker can represent your name or company; honor of someone care for, or an inspirational message; cost: $100.

All participants will receive a t-shirt, participant bag, refreshments, and a pancake breakfast. There will be informational vendor booths as well. The course is scenic, and shaded with a slide grade. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. and the race begins at 8:00 a.m. There are park restrooms in addition to plenty of porta-potties. Parking is free.

Trophies are awarded to the top three male and female runners. 5K age group medals categories are: 14 & under, 15-19, 20-29,30-39,40-49,50-59,60-69, and 70+. 1 mile medal categories are 6 and under, 7-10 and 11-13. Clubs and teams with the most participants, organizations (according to size) with the most participants, and the first law enforcement officer and the first fire fighter across the finish line are all eligible for awards.

This race has special meaning for many of the committee members. Either they are victims of this disease or have loved ones that are suffering. Through their tireless efforts, it is their hope that the Lupus Race for Life will increase awareness, education, and research grants so that a cure is found in this lifetime.

Lupus International founded in 1983, is a primary resource for education and support of Lupus sufferers in Southern California. For 22 years, we have provided thousands of people with educational and supportive services.

Communication is the key to understanding the critical needs of lupus sufferers. People need to be aware that while people with this illness look fine, the ravage of their bodies, the difficulty in daily living, the coping with severe pain are very tough to live with. A cure is desperately needed.

Lupus (systemic lupus erythematosus or SLE) is a chronic disease that can cause inflammation, pain, and tissue damage throughout the body. It is an auto-immune disorder whereby the body's immune system attacks the recipient and manifests itself in a myriad of ways. Lupus affects more than 2.5 million people in the United States. The cause for this tragic disease is yet unknown, and there is currently no cure. When a person develops serious lupus, they may have problems with their kidneys, heart, lungs or blood cells. Lupus can be difficult to diagnose and can mimic other diseases.

Lupus International's primary mission is to eradicate Lupus by supporting Lupus research, alleviating suffering for Lupus patients through patient services, and effecting early detection of undiagnosed cases through awareness promotions.    There is hope. The Lupus Support Center provides encouragement to patients and families with the resources to improve communication and coping skills. To learn more, visit us at www.lupusinternational.com.

Registration can be completed through the mail, over the phone 866-RUN-4-SLE, or online at www.lupusinternational.com.
