WirelessAmberAlerts.com, a wireless version of the national Amber Alert initiative, uses localized text messaging to inform subscribers when a minor has been abducted and an Amber Alert has been issued in their area.
“We are always looking for the right causes to support,” said Garrick Boyd, SellyourCell.com vice president of operations, “This particular initiative fits the bill and is unique because it’s not only a public service but the information is disseminated over our medium, the wireless phone.”
SellyourCell.com is an Orlando based wireless recycling company that uses their website at www.sellyourcell.com to purchase old and used cell phones directly from consumers.
This process eliminates a number of hazardous and harmful substances from coming into contact with the environment and can provide a substantial financial incentive for participation.
Boyd says that SellyourCell.com’s contribution to the WirelessAmberAlerts.org project will be to assist in creating awareness about it. SellyourCell.com has already sent notices to all of its email subscribers and it will be posting sign up instructions on it’s web site at www.sellyourcell.com.
The Amber Alert system was implemented following the 1996 abduction and murder of nine-year-old Amber Hagerman, and has become a nationwide system for alerting the public about child abductions. Past information provided by Amber Alerts, wireless and otherwise, have contained detailed descriptions of the child, their abductor, and the abductor’s vehicle. When this information is rapidly made public it can increase the likelihood that an abducted child may be safely recovered and reunited with their family.
“It is so simple to sign up for wireless Amber Alerts and it is a completely passive system unless there is an alert in your area,” Boyd says, “The way it is designed, you are not disturbed unless there is the potential for you to help. It is a true win-win initiative which we here at SellyourCell.com we are proud to support.”
In order to sign up for wireless Amber Alerts, Boyd says to simply visit www.WirelessAmberAlerts.org and enter your wireless number in the space provided. Once signed up, people will be sent text messages on their cell phone when an Amber Alert is issued in their area.
“It’s just one of those things,” Boyd says, “You know, you’ll probably even forget that you signed up for, but god forbid if an alert is issued in your area you’ll know what to look for.”
Boyd adds that one alert can make all the difference.
