Investigators Virtually Return to the Scene of a Crime Again and Again Using Leica Geosystems ScanStation on A&E Real-Life Series, CRIME 360

The latest episode of A&E’s hit series CRIME 360, called ‘Killing Fields’ which aired April 10, 2008, showcased the power of the Leica Geosystems ScanStation to record a crime scene in vivid 3D so that detectives can virtually revisit the scene again and again.

Norcross, GA (Vocus/PRWEB ) April 17, 2008 -- The latest episode of A&E’s hit series CRIME 360, called ‘Killing Fields’ which aired April 10, 2008, showcased the power of the Leica Geosystems ScanStation to record a crime scene in vivid 3D so that detectives can virtually revisit the scene again and again.

This is an ideal application of the Leica ScanStation, allowing detectives to return to the crime scene multiple times, develop ideas, theories and even prove or disprove suspect statements
The ScanStation, a state-of-the-art forensic 3D laser scanner, offered police and forensic investigators an unprecedented opportunity to preserve and then study the murder scene multiple times, and ultimately help figure out what happened.

The story begins when detectives are called to an abandoned lot where the body of a gunshot victim lies face up. It’s clear the lot was used to shoot off guns the night before, presumably in celebration of Independence Day, as more than 60+ shell casings are strewn about the scene – yet none of the shell casings are next to the body.

Hoping to find an essential clue, investigators put the Leica ScanStation to work recording the scene including the body, shell casings, trees, shrubbery and nearby structures, all in 3D. The ScanStation is uniquely equipped to make millions of measurements, creating a highly accurate virtual 3D image, even outside, in bright sunlight.

With a list of suspects, detectives virtually revisit the 3D scene again and again, developing possible scenarios based on evidence, crime stopper tips and suspect statements. These scenarios include the possibility of a long-range sharpshooter. As each scenario is ruled out, detectives draw closer to discovering exactly what happened on that fateful night.

“This is an ideal application of the Leica ScanStation, allowing detectives to return to the crime scene multiple times, develop ideas, theories and even prove or disprove suspect statements,” says Tony Grissim, Forensic Account Manager for Leica Geosystems. “Through “Crime 360” and our new forensic web site at http://www.leica-geosystems.com/us/forensic, we continue to introduce law enforcement and public safety officials across the country to the benefits of this technology.”
