Mottram Honours His End of the HBA Great Australian Run challenge

The historic inaugurual HBA Great Australian Run may be over but Australian champion runner Craig Mottram had one more challenge to complete - switching his health insurance to HBA.

Melbourne, VIC (PRWEB / PRWEB) December 9, 2008 -- The historic inaugural HBA Great Australian Run may be over, but Australian champion runner Craig Mottram had one more challenge to complete.

Mottram, who was competing over 15 kilometres for the first time, finished 4th in the HBA Great Australian Run, which was won by the world's greatest distance runner, Haile Gebreselassie.

In a pre-run challenge issued to HBA Director Mark Engel, Mottram committed to transfering his health insurance membership to HBA, if Engel, a first-time fun run participant, completed the 15 kilometre course.

True to his word, Mottram returned to HBA's offices in Hawthorn today to honour his end of the challenge after Engel completed the course during last Sunday's event.

"I congratulate Mark and the rest of the 80-strong Team HBA for their participation in the inaugural HBA Great Australian Run," Mottram said. "It just goes to show that there is no other event like this in Australia, where beginners and experienced runners alike can line up against the world's best Olympic and World distance running champions."

Mottram said that as a professional athlete, injury and illness prevention and treatment were high on his priority list.

But he said it was not always the heavy toll of training that caused problems and required treatment. "I managed to turn my ankle during a game of backyard basketball, which required treatment," he said. "Many young people may not see the benefit in having private health insurance, but given that the cost of medical care for unexpected illnesses or injuries can run into hundreds or even thousands of dollars, I find that it pays to have protection."

Engel said he found the course tough-going towards the end, but rewarding to complete, particularly given the support of the crowds who turned out to participate or support the runners.

"It was fantastic to see so many people doing something good for their own health, by getting out and active, and also doing something for a good cause, with thousands of dollars raised for local and national charities," he said.
