Houston Arts & Entertainment Scene: Spring is in the Air and the Art
at Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park
HOUSTON (Business Wire EON/PRWEB ) February 11, 2008 --
Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park unfolds Friday, March 28 through
Sunday, March 30, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nestled amidst the towering Texas
pines, more than 300 visual and performing artists from around the world
will transform the park's meandering trails into an outdoor art gallery
blooming with juried art and multi-cultural Houston entertainment.
The art festival, staged the March weekend of the 28-30th this year, was
ranked #3 in Sunshine Artist Magazine's 2006 “200
Best” Festivals, the top-selling art festivals
in the country voted by the artists.
Spring 2008 Festival's featured artist Bruce Holwerda will highlight the
field of artists with his fantasy art painting, “In
the Fast Lane.”
Showcasing works representing 19 media formats, of its 300 visual
artists, two-thirds will be returning and one-third will be first-time
participants.
To engage budding artists, the Festival sponsors an Emerging Artists
program for Houston-area high school students to create and exhibit
their installation art. Younger children will enjoy the Creative Zone,
an interactive area with such offerings as mask making, face painting,
painted rock art and wax hand sculptures for Houston entertainment.
Proceeds of donations made in the Creative Zone go to the Festival's
participating Houston non-profit partners.
Houston Arts Alliance produces the performance stage with multi-cultural
musical and dance entertainment Saturday and Sunday. There will be live
piano music in the Broadway Across Houston Broadway Café
and a world-premiere dance by CORE Performance Company. International
food and beer and wine cafes serve a host of culinary delights.
The City of Houston, Budweiser Select, Houston Parks & Recreation
Department, and KTRK-TV are sponsors of the Festival, which is funded in
part by grants from the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance.
Over the past 37 years, the Art Colony Association, the 501c(3)
organization that produces tow Bayou City Art Festivals per year, has
raised more than $2.4 million for local non-profit organizations,
recipients of a percentage of Festival net proceeds.
Admission to Houston's popular March entertainment and arts-filled
weekend event is $10 for adults and free for children 12 and under.
There is no public parking in Houston's Memorial Park. For information
on free shuttle services, schedules and pre-sale discount tickets, visit www.bayoucityartfestival.com
