Postal Cancellation Commemorates 65th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor Attack

The U.S. Postal Service will commemorate the 65th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor this Dec. 7 by collaborating with the USS Arizona Memorial, USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park, Battleship Missouri Memorial, and Pacific Aviation Museum - Pearl Harbor to issue postal cancellation and commemorative envelope designs featuring each of those sites.

Pearl Harbor (Vocus/PRWEB ) December 4, 2006 -- The U.S.

For those who wish to collect all four commemorative envelopes and have them officially stamped on Dec. 7 with the postal cancellation, the USPS will open special postal sub-stations for that day at each Pearl Harbor historic site:

We encourage the public to collect all four Pearl Harbor Historic Sites commemorative envelopes by visiting each of these treasured sites

  • USS Arizona Memorial (10 a.m. - 1 p.m.)
  • USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park (10 a.m. - 1 p.m.)
  • Battleship Missouri Memorial (10 a.m. - noon)
  • Pacific Aviation Museum - Pearl Harbor (noon - 2 p.m.)

Each envelope will come in its own attractive "Pearl Harbor Historic Sites" folder featuring color photos and descriptions of these world-famous memorials and museums. The commemorative envelopes will also include the Purple Heart stamp as long as supplies last. (The U.S. Postal Service originally issued the Purple Heart stamp on May 30, 2003, and then re-issued it this year to honor the sacrifice of members of the United State military services who have been killed or wounded in action). The cost of each envelope with folder will be $10.

"We encourage the public to collect all four Pearl Harbor Historic Sites commemorative envelopes by visiting each of these treasured sites," said state Rep. K. Mark Takai, who assisted the memorials and museums in requesting the postal cancellations. "The 65th anniversary commemoration of the battle that ushered our nation into history's most devastating war is a time to remember the many sacrifices and examples of valor demonstrated by our veterans. I am proud to have played a role in seeing this project through. The commemorative pieces are sure to immediately become collectibles, but more importantly we hope that they will serve as reminders of the selflessness of our veterans."

Individuals may choose to bring their own envelopes for cancellation. Stamps will be sold at the sub-stations. Afterward, additional envelopes will be available for sale in each site's gift shop.

The Pearl Harbor Historic Sites, consisting of the USS Arizona Memorial, USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park, Battleship Missouri Memorial, and Pacific Aviation Museum--Pearl Harbor, collectively provide a powerful historical journey unlike any other, an experience that has matured and grown far beyond that of a mere single day. These memorials and historic entities at Pearl Harbor are the caretakers of several of our nation's most treasured icons, enduring tributes to the honor and sacrifices of our veterans, and windows into past eras by which to share real examples of valor during a time when the future of our nation and the world truly hung in the balance.

USS Arizona Memorial
The USS Arizona is the final resting place for most of the crew members who lost their lives on December 7, 1941. On Memorial Day, 1962, the USS Arizona Memorial was formally dedicated. It honors and commemorates all members of the Armed Forces of the United States and civilians who gave their lives to their country during the attack on Pearl Harbor. In 1980, Congress mandated that the USS Arizona Memorial would become a unit of the National Park Service.

USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park
The USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park is dedicated to the sacrifice of more than 3,500 submarine personnel lost in World War II. This gallant band of brothers, compromising less than two percent of the U.S. Navy sank more than 5.5 million tons (55 percent) of enemy shipping, while sustaining losses of 52 submarines that remain on Eternal Patrol.

Battleship Missouri Memorial
The world's last battleship, the USS Missouri, completed an astounding career spanning five decades and three wars -- World War II, Korea and Operation Desert Storm -- best known for her role as the site of Japan's WWII surrender, which brought history's most devastating war to a close. Today, the 887-foot, 45,000-ton "Mighty Mo" is open for visitors as the Battleship Missouri Memorial, an American icon under the tireless care of the non-profit USS Missouri Memorial Association, whose mission is to create and maintain a fitting memorial to the people and historic events reflecting our nation's proud legacy of duty, honor, strength, resolve and sacrifice.

Pacific Aviation Museum--Pearl Harbor
The Pacific Aviation Museum -- Pearl Harbor occupies the WWII hangars and control tower on Ford Island that still bear the scars as our nation's first aviation battlefield. Giving visitors a front row seat to the Pacific Theater and presenting aircraft and their stories, the museum illustrates how aviation turned the tide of the war.
