This Utility will uncover local host-based vulnerabilities known as Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE®s) and will show you how to close them. Some can be closed with new patches and security fixes from software vendors, others can be closed by turning off high risk services or those that are exploitable without a ready patch and others can only be blocked through intelligent firewall reconfiguration.

According to USCERT, exploitation of CVEs are the root cause of downtime and successful hacker attacks. Some of the most successful malware attacks such as W.32, Sasser, Bugbear and Melissa all exploited CVEs. If you don't have the hole, the exploit cannot cause you harm.
