Fast, Free Software Upgrades Available at Segway of Oakland

Segway of Oakland is offering free, speedy software upgrades that resolve the re-call issue

(PRWEB) September 17, 2006 -- Segway Inc. of Bedford, N.H., announced a voluntary recall this week of all Segway units after reports that a software glitch can cause riders to fall off.

In response, Segway of Oakland is offering free, speedy software upgrades at its Bay Area showroom, eliminating the time and hassle of sending units to New Hampshire to have the same upgrade performed.

The safety of our customers and our products is our top priority. When we identified this condition we notified the (U.S.) Consumer Product Safety Commission and immediately began working on a software upgrade to address the issue
“Segway has carefully instructed dealers on how to handle the necessary software upgrades, so we are able to offer our local customers an easier method of solving this problem,” said Segway of Oakland partner Darren Romar. “We can upgrade any unit for any Segway customer, whether they purchased their Segway from us or not.”

According to Segway Inc., on rare and very unlikely occasions Segway units can unexpectedly reverse direction of the wheels due to an error in the software design. Hardware is not affected by this bug, the company noted in a written statement.

“This can occur when the PT’s Speed Limiter tilts back the machine to slow it down and the rider goes off and then back onto the PT within a short period of time,” states a press release posted on Segway’s website Sept. 14, 2006 ( http://www.segway.com ). “The voluntary recall applies to all Segway PTs sold to date including all Segway PT i Series, e Series, p Series, XT, GT and i2 models. The Segway x2, due for release later this month, is not affected by this recall and all new shipments of the I2 are being shipped with the new software release.”

“The safety of our customers and our products is our top priority. When we identified this condition we notified the (U.S.) Consumer Product Safety Commission and immediately began working on a software upgrade to address the issue,” said Jim Norrod, Chief Executive Officer, Segway Inc., in the same press release.

For information on software upgrades and to reserve a time slot, call Segway of Oakland, (800) 659-8731, go online to http://www.segwayofoakland.com , or visit the showroom at 212 International Boulevard in Oakland.
