Walks of Life - Teleflora and NBC Mark 100 Days to 100th
Anniversary of Mother’s Day with Nationwide
Call for “America’s
Favorite Mom” Entrants
Incredible “Marathon Mom”
Just One of Hundreds of Nominations Found on AmericasFavoriteMom.com
LOS ANGELES (Business Wire EON/PRWEB ) February 4, 2008 --
Linda Quirk is not your typical mother. At 55 and a grandmother of
three, Mrs. Quirk is about to embark on an amazing journey –
seven marathons across seven continents – all
to raise awareness and one million dollars for a drug and alcohol
treatment center that saved her stepdaughter’s
life. Quirk is just one of hundreds who have already been nominated for
a chance to be selected by Teleflora and NBC to appear on the network’s
new reality television series, “America’s
Favorite Mom.”
“When I heard about the search for America’s
Favorite Mom, I just knew I had to enter my stepmother Linda,”
said Katherine Quirk. “From helping me
overcome one of the lowest and darkest points in my life to running
marathons around the globe so other families can afford the same
innovative treatment I received, she is truly a remarkable mother. As a
mother myself, she inspires me daily. This nomination is just a small
way of saying thanks and showing the world how amazing she really is.”
Now through April 30, proud children and adults can easily nominate
their mothers for this prestigious award and once-in-a-lifetime
experience by uploading videos, their favorite photos of mom and essay
testimonials to www.AmericasFavoriteMom.com.
Once nominated, moms can win thousands of dollars in exclusive online
prizes and sweepstakes. The program will showcase moms from all walks of
life: single moms, working moms, stay-at-home moms, unconventional moms
and military moms who may be serving overseas or holding down the home
front for those who are serving our country.
Once the nominations are collected, the top 15 nominees will appear on
NBC’s highly-rated “Today
Show” and viewers will have the chance to
vote for their favorite mom at the end of each show. The winning mom
from each day of the week will be featured on “Teleflora
presents America’s Favorite Mom,”
a grand finale, one-hour primetime NBC television special airing on
Mother’s Day, May 11, 2008. The show will
include guest appearances from a number of celebrity moms as well as the
stories of famous mothers who have made history. At the end of the
program, a celebrity host will crown one mom “America’s
Favorite Mom” and name a rose in her honor.
She will also receive thousands of dollars in cash and prizes, including
an 18k gold heart-shaped America’s
Favorite Mom pendant trimmed with dazzling diamonds.
“We’ve conducted
research and a new Teleflora survey shows that over half of Americans
cite their moms as ‘true female super heroes.’1
Teleflora wants to celebrate these unsung heroes in a unique way by
creating a special search for America’s
Favorite Mom,” said Shawn Weidmann,
president, Teleflora. “Whether it is 1908 or
2008, mothers remain the heart and soul of this country, and we
encourage sons and daughters alike to take a moment and acknowledge mom’s
unconditional love and sacrifice through the years.”
MOTHER’S DAY ROOTS
The concept behind Mother’s Day began with Ann
Jarvis, a young homemaker who wanted to improve sanitation through “Mothers'
Work Days.” By organizing women throughout
the Civil War to work for better sanitary conditions, she inspired her
own daughter, Anna Jarvis, to continue to fight for women’s
causes. Anna led the first Mother’s Day
celebration in a church in Grafton,
West Virginia, on 10
May, 1908 to memorialize moms everywhere; this church eventually
became the International Mother's Day Shrine. Also at this first
official Mother’s Day celebration, Anna
handed out her mother’s favorite flowers, the
white carnations, as they represent sweetness, purity and patience. A
century-old tradition was born: the giving of flowers as a way to honor
and celebrate mothers on their special day.
To honor moms like Ann and Anna Jarvis and to promote the “America’s
Favorite Mom” search, Teleflora has created
an exclusive “America’s
Favorite Mom” bouquet. As with all of
Teleflora’s bouquets, this unique bouquet
will be hand-arranged and hand-delivered by local Teleflora florists so
everyone can make their moms feel like “America’s
Favorite Mom” on their special day.
