Striking Writers Receive Donation from Producer

The executive producer of Monna Vanna, the classic stage play which is set to open in Hollywood later this month, has donated a block of tickets to unemployed, striking writers.

Los Angeles (PRWEB) November 9, 2007 -- The executive producer of Monna Vanna , the classic stage play which is set to open in Hollywood later this month, has donated a block of tickets to unemployed, striking writers.

Monna Vanna
Monna Vanna

one of the greatest plays in all world literature.
"The donation could be perceived as charity, but it's really more of an investment," said Quent Cordair, owner of Quent Cordair Fine Art in Burlingame, California, which is backing the production. "The writers have some free time on their hands, and we think that there could be no better way for them to use some of their time than to take in and experience one of the greatest dramas ever penned. Our hope is that one or two of the writers may be inspired by this play to reach for higher heights in their own writing, to create more exalted characters and more captivating, romantic story lines, when they return to work."

Novelist Ayn Rand described the work as "one of the greatest plays in all world literature." Written in 1902, Monna Vanna was Maurice Maeterlinck's first brilliant success. It was played on every important stage in Europe, except in England, where it was forbidden by censor. In 1911, Maeterlinck was honored with the Nobel Prize for literary achievement.

The story of Monna Vanna is set in the late fifteenth century. The battered city of Pisa faces imminent vanquishment by the superior army of Florence.

As the city's commander prepares for the inevitable end, he receives from the enemy an astonishing offer of rescue. The attack will be called off, the siege will be lifted, the starving city will be resupplied - on one condition. The commander's wife, a woman revered as the epitome of honor and virtue, must surrender her body for a night to the hated leader of the Florentine army.

The production is scheduled to run from November 29 through December 16 at the Stella Adler Theatre on Hollywood Blvd. A block of 25 tickets has been set aside for credentialed WGA writers, who can call Jeanette Floyd at (323)969-4602 for more information and to reserve tickets.
